Né à Bobigny et formé par les rues de Goussainville, Sidy Kouyaté est un artiste dont la trajectoire ne doit rien aux institutions et tout à une attention singulière portée au monde. Très jeune, il se découvre une affinité profonde avec les traditions de l'Asie — taoïsme, bouddhisme zen — qu'il fréquente avec la même sincérité que sa propre foi musulmane, convaincu que les grandes traditions spirituelles convergent, par des voies différentes, vers un même horizon.
C'est par le corps qu'il commence. Pratiquant de Taekwon-Do dès l'enfance, il remporte le championnat de France dans la catégorie cadet, puis le titre de vice-champion l'année suivante — avec, dit-il, une certaine nonchalance. La discipline martiale lui ouvre un autre monde : celui des familles d'Asie du Sud-Est, vietnamiennes et cambodgiennes, avec lesquelles il grandit en partageant bien davantage que des tatamis.
La musique arrive par les cassettes VHS que le frère aîné de son ami Pierre Agotioh rapportait de MTV. Ces enregistrements de clips Hip-Hop passaient en boucle, et très vite l'entourage remarque chez lui une oreille peu commune : il identifie les producteurs à la seule écoute, distingue les textures, remonte les filiations. Les Neptunes — Pharrell Williams et Chad Hugo — bouleversent son horizon sonore et l'ouvrent à une curiosité musicale sans frontières, depuis laquelle il ne cessera de remonter le fil d'une généalogie cohérente.
Cinéaste, photographe, dessinateur et compositeur, il n'a jamais cessé de produire. Ce site est le lieu où cette œuvre, jusqu'ici dispersée, trouve enfin une demeure.
Born in Bobigny and shaped by the streets of Goussainville, Sidy Kouyaté is an artist whose trajectory owes nothing to institutions and everything to a singular attentiveness to the world. From an early age, he discovered a deep affinity with the traditions of Asia — Taoism, Zen Buddhism — which he approached with the same sincerity as his own Muslim faith, convinced that the great spiritual traditions converge, through different paths, toward a shared horizon.
He begins through the body. A practitioner of Taekwon-Do from childhood, he wins the French national championship in the cadet category, then claims the vice-champion title the following year — with, he says, a certain nonchalance. The martial discipline opens another world to him: that of Southeast Asian families, Vietnamese and Cambodian, with whom he grows up sharing far more than training mats.
Music arrives through the VHS tapes that his best friend Pierre Agotioh's older brother would bring back from MTV. These recorded Hip-Hop videos played on loop, and it quickly became clear to those around him that he possessed an uncommon ear: he could identify producers by sound alone, distinguish textures, trace lineages. The Neptunes — Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo — upend his sonic horizon and open him to a borderless musical curiosity, from which he would never stop tracing a coherent genealogy.
Filmmaker, photographer, draughtsman and composer, he has never stopped making. This site is the place where that work, until now scattered, finally finds a home.
